Cloud Security: Exchange Server Security Updates
As a Cloud Architect, security is always at the forefront of my mind. Keeping cloud systems up-to-date and secure is a primary concern for anyone utilizing cloud technologies. That’s why I’m happy to report that Microsoft recently released Exchange Server Security Updates for April 2021.
What’s Included in the Exchange Server Security Updates?
The April 2021 Exchange Server Security Updates include fixes for a variety of security vulnerabilities, including:
* A vulnerability in the way Exchange Server handles certain types of user input which could allow an attacker to gain access to a system
* A vulnerability in the way Exchange Server handles certain protocol requests which could allow an attacker to gain access to a system
* A vulnerability in the way Exchange Server handles certain authentication requests which could allow an attacker to gain access to a system
* Various other vulnerabilities which could allow an attacker to gain access to a system
The April 2021 Exchange Server Security Updates also include fixes for various other issues, including:
* Various fixes for Outlook Web App (OWA) and Outlook Anywhere
* Various fixes for Exchange ActiveSync, Exchange Web Services and Exchange Web Services Managed API
* Various fixes for the Exchange Server Management Console and Exchange Management Shell
* Various fixes for the Exchange Server Transport service and Exchange Address Book service
How to Apply the Exchange Server Security Updates?
The best way to apply the Exchange Server Security Updates is to use Microsoft’s Exchange Server Update Installer. This is a command-line tool that allows you to quickly and easily apply the latest Exchange Server security updates.
To use the Exchange Server Update Installer, you’ll need to download the latest version from the Microsoft Download Center. Once downloaded, you can then execute the following command in an elevated command prompt:
setup.exe /mode:install /role:mailbox /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
This will begin the installation process, which will update your Exchange Server with the latest security updates. Once complete, you should see the following message:
The Exchange Server security updates have been successfully applied.
At this point, your Exchange Server is now up-to-date with the latest security updates.
